Genetics drives the functioning of teams, camps and tribes. Genetics drives the
functioning of a company board. This is what a Booz, Allen and Hamilton report,
of late 1996, seems to suggest. If these fi ndings are valid, then where do the
current concepts of ‘Task Focusing Groups’, ‘Learning Teams’ and ‘Learning Organisations’
stand? An understanding of the current body of knowledge in this area could provide
the answers. The truth lies between nature at the genetics end and nurture at the
other. Where exactly does it lie? The jury is still out on this question. The objective
of this lesson is to lay the foundations. Dr. G K Valecha, Director of the Essae
Chandran Institute and a former Dean at IIMB, is the author of this lesson. Forming,
storming, norming, performing and maturation; these are the fi ve phases of experiential
learning in the team development process. Leadership models and leadership styles,
as appropriate to these fi ve phases, are studied. Successful leaders from business
and industry reveal their inner selves.
